Join Our Journey
The Aquarium of Niagara's Multi-Phase Capital Campaign
The Aquarium of Niagara is everyone's Aquarium. We rely on the support of visitors, patrons, and businesses that care about conservation and living animals in our oceans and lakes.
The first phase of Join Our Journey is the building of a state-of-the-art Humboldt Penguin Exhibit and Classroom.
The Aquarium of Niagara is one of only 20 institutions throughout the United States and Canada to feature the threatened Humboldt penguins and we need your help to keep these remarkable, flightless birds here so everyone can enjoy, study, and interact with members of our colony.
The Aquarium is vigorously pursuing accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) so we can bring in younger penguins and introduce them to our older colony. This is part of the Species Survival Program (SSP) under the jurisdiction of the AZA. The Aquarium's current colony only has seven members, and to bring in and breed more Humboldt penguins we must be accredited by AZA which is slated to happen in 2018. The new Humboldt penguin exhibit and encounter classroom will cost $3.2 million. Right now we're close, but not quite there. We need your help to reach our goal.
Prior to this building, the Aquarium-with help from a Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) grant-made use of our talented and skilled staff to fix, restore, and add to exhibits to the main floor and second floor to make more room for this new Humboldt penguin exhibit and classroom. We've added 23 new and/or refurbished exhibits in the last two years and now we're ready, with your help, to build the centerpiece of the main floor.
The new 1,600 square-foot exhibit will mimic the natural environment of the Humboldt penguins and includes a 10,000-gallon tank with above and below water viewing for the public, terraced ledges and a state-of-the-art life-support system. The 400 square-foot encounter classroom will offer opportunities to expand existing collaboration with higher education facilities throughout the world. The classroom will be equipped with high-tech equipment including computers, smart boards, lab equipment, and teleconferencing to make this classroom a destination spot on its own. The classroom will also be used for animal encounters to enhance education and entertainment.
