Education Classes at the Aquarium

Education is at the core of our mission statement. We believe in education through inspiration. It is our goal to integrate conservation and an appreciation of all aquatic ecosystems into every visitor's life through hands-on educational experiences and thought-provoking programs and exhibits. Our belief is that local and individual conservation efforts lead to global changes and prepares our participants to be better stewards of the environment.

First Friday Each Month: Au-Some Aquarium
  • Special evenings dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, sensory friendly environment where families with autism can meet, learn, and have fun together. Families will enjoy a touch tank, sea lion show, sensory and art activities, gluten free snacks and information resources from community partners. Each night has a different theme! The program was developed with collaboration between Aquarium of Niagara, Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, and several community partners.

Every Third Tuesday of Each Month: Sea Squirt Toddler Program
  • Each session is specifically designed to encourage interaction between parent and child through story time, fun-to-do crafts and hands-on learning experiences. Each gathering is structured to enhance each child's interest in the aquatic ecosystem and the natural world.
  • Time: Sea Squirts Toddler Program from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
  • Ages: Perfect for children 2 - 4 years old
  • Price: $5/member; $5 plus admission to the Aquarium for non-members
 
May 7th: Feed the Touch Tank
  • You already know who's who in the touch tank, now take part in their care and learn about the invertebrates' food and how we feed them. It is a fun interaction where you get to feed the invertebrates!

May 8th: Fishing
  • Do you like to fish? Join us to explore what Great Lakes fishing has to offer and learn the rules and regulations protecting these waters. You will have a chance to throw a line in the water and see what you can catch.

June 27th: Junior Oceanographer
  • Do you love the ocean? Have you ever wondered what a marine biologist does? If so, this is the class for you. We will not only talk about the ocean, the Aquarium will be our lab and we will use hands-on activities to discover how we study the ocean and its many environments and inhabitants.
  • Time: 10:00am to 12:00pm
  • Ages: 8+

June 30th: Junior Vet Class
  • Running an aquarium requires a lot of attention to the health of the animals. This fun-filled, hands-on class will take you behind-the-scenes to meet the staff responsible for their health and see how we care for our collection. This is perfect for those considering a career in veterinary science.

  • Ages: 12-16 years old
  • Price: $25/non-members, $8/members

  • Seals are winter-loving animals, so how do they deal with the heat of summer? Join us to learn about the amazing ways seals survive through the seasons. We will spend time watching the aquarium seals and viewing behind-the-scenes care to understand how we help keep them comfortable no matter the temperature.

July 14th: Toddler Class - 5 Senses
  • Explore the Aquarium and learn about your five senses. We will compare animal senses to our own, create a craft, and listen to a story.

July 29th: Sharks in Depth
  • Despite being one of the most familiar ocean animals, sharks are greatly misunderstood creatures. Get the facts with us as we dive into their world to discuss how they hunt, what they eat, and whether or not they really are a danger to humans. This hands-on class will leave you with a new appreciation for a top predator of the ocean.

Agust 5th: Family Sleepovers
  • Grab your sleeping bags and your coziest pajamas for a themed overnight adventure at the Aquarium. You will have a chance to explore the Aquarium when the lights are off, enjoy learning about the invertebrates at the touch tank, and participate in fun activities about aquarium animals. At the end of the night if you are not ready for bed, you can watch a fun, family movie. Pizza, snacks, and drinks are included with the night's activities. In the morning, you will have time to tour the building, have some breakfast, and attend a private sea lion show. Children must be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration is required.

August 10th: CSI
  • A strange smell, an odd behavior, and the animals are not talking. We need your help to solve this mystery. This hands-on event will put you in the detective's seat to solve the who, what, where, and why. It's an aquarium whodunit that will surprise you!

  • Ages: 13+

August 21st to 25th: Aquatic All-Star Camp
  • Searching for an exciting summer experience for your child? Our Aquatic All-Stars camp provides an opportunity to get close to some of their favorite aquarium animals! Each day will be centered on a different animal and their natural habitat. Our goal is to give every camper an unforgettable experience that focuses on science, nature and conservation. With hands-on learning and up-close animal encounters this will be a summer to remember.
